Birijat Mela (Surmadevi Birijat Mela)—A religious and cultural festival from Aunshi to Purnima
Surma Devi Birijat Mela and Surma Sarovar, celebrated under Surma Rural Municipality in Sudurpaschim Bajhang district, are very important from a religious, cultural and geographical point of view. Birijat Mela, which runs from Aunshi to Purnima, is a ceremony of religious worship, worship of Surma Devi, with devotees singing hymns and kirtan. Since the worship is continuous from Aunshi to Purnima, a large crowd gathers around the temple during this period.
The difficult journey to Surma Sarovar is a center of spiritual experience for pilgrims who want to imbibe its holiness. The recognition and protection of these places enriches our cultural heritage. Birijat Mela is an opportunity to honor and worship Surma Devi—one of the sixteen forms of Durga Bhavani. Devotees believe that they will receive blessings by worshiping the goddess, singing hymns, kirtan and performing religious rituals during this festival.
Surma Sarovar Lake—A Symbol of Himalayan Peace and Purity
A sacred Himalayan lake located in the mountainous region of Surma Rural Municipality in the far western Bajhang district, Parthi Kund is a little-known but deeply religious and geographically significant place. It is situated at an altitude of about 4,300 meters. The road to reach the lake is quite challenging, with high mountain passes and breathtaking views. It is a four-day journey from the district headquarters of Chainpur (one day by car from Chainpur to Surma and three days on foot from Surma to Surma Sarovar Lake). According to religious beliefs, the water of this lake is as sacred as Mansarovar and is also the abode of Surma Devi. Therefore, it is believed that pilgrims who come here to bathe and worship here will have a special spiritual experience.
